CHOOSING THE RIGHT WATER HEATER

Both traditional tank-style and tankless water heater systems can be designed to provide adequate hot water for your home but differ in how they produce it and each have pros and cons to consider. Tankless water heaters heat water on demand, providing an endless supply of hot water, where as tradional tank-type water heaters heat and maintain the temperature of the water inside of a storage tank.

Traditional Tank-Style Water Heaters

Traditional water heaters come in a variety of sizes and brands. For our mountain residents, with properties at higher elevations, the California Plumbing Code requires an Ultra Low-NOx tank. Tanks that are not Ultra Low-NOx compliant are not permitted in the higher elevations of our mountain communities. Hilman's Plumbing stocks and installs code-compliant, American-made Bradford White tanks, which offer superior quality and longevity at competetive prices.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters are another great choice that many are not aware they have the option of. We have encountered a number of people in our mountain communities that have been told that tankless water heaters do not work at a higher altitude, however most major tankless water heater brands are certified for use up to 10,000 feet in elevation. Tankless water heater systems installed by uncertified and inexperienced installers account for the vast majority of tankless water heater failures which have fueled the misinformation about their performance at higher altitudes. In order to function as designed, tankless water heaters must be properly installed by a knowledgeable, factory-trained certified installer and calibrated for altitude specifications. When they are installed properly, they function beautifully, providing endless hot water very efficiently.

TANKLESS WATER HEATERS

Endless Hot Water – One of the main reasons tankless water heaters are becoming so popular is that you will never run out of hot water. A properly sized unit will produce hot water continually until you turn it off.

Smaller Space Needed – Tankless water heaters are also much smaller (about the size of a carry on suitcase) and take up less floor space because they are mounted to a wall.

Energy Efficient – This style of water heater is also more energy efficient since it doesn’t have to keep water hot 24 hours a day, seven days a week whether you are there to use it or not. You will pay less in energy bills.

Longevity – Quality tankless water heaters are designed to last 10 - 15 years longer than traditional tank-style water heaters.

TANK-STYLE WATER HEATERS

Tried and Tested – Traditional tank-style water heaters utilize a time-tested technology and are generally very dependable.

Initial Cost – Initial purchase and installation cost is lower than tankless water heaters.

Maintenance – Simple design allows for less overall maintenance. An annual tank "tune-up" is recommended.

Hot Water During Power Outage – Standard gas-fired tank-style water heaters generally do not require electricity to maintain hot water supply.
